Never Too Late – Life Begins At 50

An increasing number of people are waking up to the fact that it’s never too late to start a new life. Many are reinventing themselves in their middle age. You know a bit like me coming to blogging and staring an online business into my late 40’s. I was 47 when I began this journey.

Statistics show evidence that unemployed over-50s struggle to get back into work. Many face the prospects of long-term unemployment. The numbers are growing year by year and show no signs of improvement.

With people living longer and the pension age rising, many over-50s are feeling destined to remain on the scrapheap for ever more. Yet most are desperate to work. So they keep hunting for that allusive job, sending in their CV’s, and waiting for just a glimmer of hope.

I’d hate to have to live like this. The frustrations and boredom of all that time with nothing to do must be immense. But I do ask myself the question, ‘Would I stand for it.’ Would I allow this situation to continue week after week, month after month, year after year? I can easily answer that, with a resounding ‘No.’

So if I was in their situation what would I do? I turn my mind back a few years, to that day I was lying in the hospital bed, recovering from my eye operation. The consultant telling me everything had gone well, my eye had been saved, that I’d have at least 25% of my vision, and all I had to do was keep away from stressful exercise for up to 18 months.

Of course he was aware that I ran a gym and was extremely physically active in my role as an instructor and class teacher. Without being able to perform either of these roles I’d be a waste of space around the gym.

I was forced to make a choice. To feel sorry for myself for the next 18 months until he gave me a clean bill of health or take a new path. I decided almost immediately to do the latter. This was in fact an opportunity do something I’d always wanted to do. To discover once and for all if I could take something I was passionate about and actually make a living from it.

For most of my life I had been fascinated by the subject of personal development. My mother had bought me a book by Jose Silva when I was thirteen years old. That was the start. I would then read everything I could get my hands on. I would be backwards and forwards to the library. My mind resonated with all the principles of these wonderful personal development writers.

Having read all the books written by Tony Robbins, listened to all his Audio Tape Programs and then attended a two day seminar in London I knew that I wanted to be able to do what he did. To stand on a stage and inspire others to change their lives, to grow to become exceptional people. It was a Wow moment. I was captivated by the feeling.

I set out on a journey. I ended up as a qualified life coach, NLP practitioner complementing my fitness qualifications. Although I then did 1-2-1 coaching and was fortunate to be invited as a speaker by a variety of groups, I was never able to focus my attentions on this because my full time jobs were going to well and rewarding me in the way that was too comfortable to risk letting go. Mind you I was often tempted to walk away so I could truly follow my passions, doing something I loved.

Being in a bit of a reflective mood right now, maybe that’s why I was struck down with my eye problem. If I hadn’t been, I’d never have gotten back on the road. I wouldn’t have built what I have.

Last night I was asked a question: ‘Do I work to live or live to work?’ I laughed. I work, I live with passion, to me my work is play, my life well that’s for living.

And I want that for you. So if you’re unemployed, and a 50 something … look up to the sky … say thank you for this opportunity … I now see the hidden meaning of this things I’ve looked at with only doom and gloom … and find your passion and start a business built around it.
